What is a word of the year?
For me, it is a guiding principle, a word that sums up my approach and my ethos. However, did you know there is such a thing as the Oxford Word of the Year? Only after doing some research on this issue that I discover it. And the word for 2022 isn't one I'm familiar with…

Goblin mode

'Goblin mode' – a slang term often used in the expressions 'in goblin mode' or 'to go goblin mode' – is a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.'

The term then rose in popularity over the months following as Covid lockdown restrictions eased in many countries and people ventured out of their homes more regularly. Seemingly, it captured the prevailing mood of individuals who rejected the idea of returning to 'normal life' or rebelled against the increasingly unattainable aesthetic standards and unsustainable lifestyles on social media.

Anyway, let's talk about my word of the year…

I'm ready for a change, a shake-up. I'm stepping outside the box in 2023!

• I'm fed up playing small.
• I'm ready to Play Big.
• I've sat in the corner with the baby for far too long.
• I'm stepping out of the shadow.
• I'm unapologetically going to be seen!

I'm ready to experiment, find a better way of doing business, and, most importantly, share it with you.

To build a business, we need to start with a solid foundation; in issue 004 - It starts with you, I talked about the correct ratio for concrete, and the same goes for having the right balance for your aspirations, strengths and values. I have this, so it's now on to the next phase - finding my dream clients (you will notice I'm one step ahead of you - this is intentional for me to serve you).

How do you find your dream clients?

Like finding prince charming, you've got to kiss a few frogs before finding the right one. I'm experimenting with writing on different platforms to explore the potential of my target audience.

I am kicking off the year learning to write - I'm in a cohort to learn digital writing, a new concept to me that is revolutionary in its approach and the complete opposite of locking yourself in a room and writing with the hope that someone may read it. In fact, it's about writing atomic essays - short ideas every day, and posting to a social blog. If the content resonates, you go back and expand the writing.

It's the concept of dangling your hook in the water, seeing who takes the bait, reeling them in and feeding them some more bait.

Atomic essays can be written quickly and efficiently. Yet, they have the potential to have a lasting impact on readers and spark a conversation or discussion around a specific topic. The incredible power of writing atomic essays that can be posted to a social blog instead of your legacy blog is truly extraordinary.

Writing atomic essays for social blogging is a great way to engage with your audience and make your work more visible. You can still do the things you like, such as creating content. You can do less work to reach out and put your content in front of the right audience. With the help of tools and algorithms on each social blogging service, you can tag posts or boost them to specific audience segments and get the right people to come to you.

I'm kicking off 2023 by writing atomic essays and publishing them on a social blog. It's my experiment to understand how to serve my audience best and drive more people to Chatterbox. Continuing my ethos of life's too short to peel carrots, my chosen word for 2023 is...
